About the Sustainable Apparel Coalition
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is an industry-wide group of more than 250 leading apparel, footwear, and textile, brands, retailers, suppliers, service providers, trade associations, nonprofits, NGOs, and academic institutions working to reduce the environmental and social impacts of products around the world.

Through multi-stakeholder engagement, the SAC seeks to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability built upon a common approach for measuring and evaluating apparel, footwear, and textile product sustainability performance delivered by the Higg Index that spotlights priorities for action and opportunities for technological innovation.

The SAC was incorporated as a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization and launched the groundbreaking Higg Index suite of tools in 2011.

The Opportunity
The Director of Membership & Corporate Engagement is an absolutely critical role for the organization. As a membership coalition, the ability to deliver on our vision will only be realized through the positive engagement, progressive behavior, and collective action of our membership. Current SAC members must be inspired, empowered, equipped, and effectively supported in driving this mission forward. Beyond our current membership, the SAC also needs to expand its base and grow its reach to truly achieve the exponential impact it envisions. As a senior member of the SAC team, the Director of Membership & Corporate Engagement will play the vital role of articulating the SAC’s value proposition and ensuring the delivery of that value to members old and new.

This is a full-time role, reporting directly to the VP of Membership & Stakeholder Engagement, with a planned start date in January 2021. The Director will oversee all aspects of the management of the Membership & Corporate Engagement team, systems, and processes, while delivering growth and expansion, enhanced member engagement, and increased member satisfaction. This person will manage a distributed team, currently including three regionally-focused Member Engagement Managers and two regionally-focused Member Engagement Coordinators. Location in either the Americas or EMEA region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Membership & Corporate Engagement Leadership  
    • Support in the development of a comprehensive member and corporate engagement strategy, focused on:
      • Building and maintaining the trust of members in the SAC’s services and tools, with a primary focus on the Higg Index
      • Growing new membership and corporate engagement globally to increase the reach, influence, and impact of the SAC
      • Supporting the SAC membership effectively and efficiently to drive impact
    • Act as the core channel and link between members and other SAC functions/teams to:
      • Provide clear, focused, guidance and direction to ensure that SAC services and tools are fit for purpose
      • Ensure that members’ needs are met, complex inquiries are addressed, potential problems are averted, and optimum membership satisfaction is delivered
    • Account for the successful implementation of the member engagement strategy
    • Manage and continuously improve engagement services, protocols and processes to accelerate impact (e.g., Member Involvement, New Member Onboarding, Member Performance Review, etc.).
  • Member Relations & Satisfaction 
    • Manage membership accounts to enhance long-term relationships and ensure overall satisfaction for both new and existing members
    • Collaborate with other SAC functions/teams to ensure each new members’ experience is optimal, offering a smooth transition from initial interest / outreach, to onboarding
    • Analyze members’ engagement data to improve user experience, ensuring feedback loops to increase adoption, verification, and transparency
    • Identify opportunities for updates to organizational services, tools and programs through feedback, data analytics, competitive intelligence, and market context
  • Team Leadership  
    • Lead and manage the Member & Corporate Engagement team
    • Ensure the continuous education and growth of the team while increasing their overall competencies; nurture a transparent environment that supports constructive criticism
    • Model effective matrixed work schemes, based on the SAC organizational design, recognizing and addressing issues and opportunities
  • Sustainable Revenue  
    • Ensure the implementation of sound financial practices, including: budget management, cash flow, pricing strategy, and cost control
    • Identify, collaboratively develop, and implement opportunities for growth and diversification of revenue streams, product offering, and market expansion

Qualifications, Experiences, and Attributes

The ideal candidate is/has:

  • 10+ yrs of significant accomplishments in Membership, Account Management and/or Business Development; 5+ years working at Manager level or above
  • Experience managing a globally dispersed team, and working collaboratively as part of a global, multicultural organization
  • Proven ability to implement high-impact membership programs, with a member/client-first mindset, building solutions that demonstrate enhanced value
  • Experience in the apparel/footwear/textile industry from a brand, retail or manufacturing perspective, with expertise in social and environmental sustainability issues preferred
  • Experience working in or with manufacturing countries is a plus
  • Solutions-oriented and results-driven; high attention to detail; ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a demanding, fast-paced environment; excellent project management skills
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, leads with curiosity, and operates with a growth mindset; able to ruthlessly prioritize and remain calm in high-stress situations; confident decision-maker
  • Empathetic, with ability to engage with and influence a variety of stakeholders, members and staff; able to anticipate unique needs of different audiences across multiple levels and regions
  • Socially confident with exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. English required; additional language is a plus.

SAC offers a competitive salary and benefits, commensurate with experience. SAC’s team members are globally located, and as such, the SAC staff sometimes works early or late hours.
